What Are Dental Implants?

At Great Smiles Dental, we understand the importance of a healthy and confident smile. That’s why we are proud to offer dental implants as a permanent solution to missing teeth.

Dental implants are anchors made of titanium that are surgically implanted into the jawbone, providing a strong and long-lasting foundation for replacement teeth. They are stronger than natural teeth and do not require root canal treatment or filling. Our experienced dentists use the latest techniques in implant dentistry to ensure successful and comfortable results. With dental implants, you can enjoy a natural-looking and comfortable smile, while maintaining the health and shape of your jawbone. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and learn more about how dental implants can transform your smile. At Great Smiles Dental, we are committed to helping you achieve the smile you deserve.

Replace Missing Teeth With Dental Implants

Dental Implants are a great advancement in dentistry as they permanently replace missing teeth in a way that no previous dental technique was able to accomplish. Implants are anchors made out of the strongest titanium materials, that are implanted into the bone and then covered with a cap or denture. They are stronger than a natural root and will never require a root canal or filling.

An implant will help maintain the health and shape of the bone in the jaw area, and neighboring teeth do not need to be filed down to make room for it. It is imperative that the dentist performing the implant be experienced and skilled in all the proper techniques of implant dentistry. When done successfully, an implant will result in a comfortable and natural looking tooth, thereby providing a permanent solution to a missing tooth.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots composed of titanium that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Over time, the implant becomes integrated into the bone through a process called osseointegration, which can take several months. Once the implant has fused with the bone, a small connector called an abutment is attached to it, which serves as the point of attachment for the replacement tooth or teeth.

These replacement teeth, also known as dental crowns or bridges, are custom-made to match the shape and color of your natural teeth and are then connected to the abutment with a small screw or dental cement.

While dental implants are a durable and long-lasting option for those who have lost teeth due to different reasons, it’s essential to consult with your dentist to determine if they are a suitable option for you.

The Dental Implant Treatment Procedure

This surgical process involves placing an artificial tooth root into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or bridge.

Consultation

1

Consultation

The first step in the dental implant process is a consultation with your dentist or oral surgeon. During this appointment, your dentist will evaluate your oral health and determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants. You’ll discuss your dental history, including any previous treatments or surgeries, and your dentist may take X-rays or scans to evaluate the condition of your jawbone and surrounding teeth.

2

Implant Placement

The next step in dental implant process involves placing a titanium implant into a small hole created in the jawbone, which is done under local anesthesia. After insertion, the incision is stitched and a protective cover may be added to aid healing. Sedation may be provided for anxious patients.

3

Osseointegration

After the implant is placed, the process of osseointegration begins. This is the process by which the implant fuses with the jawbone, forming a stable and secure anchor for the replacement tooth or teeth. Osseointegration can take several months, during which time you’ll need to follow your dentist’s instructions for caring for your implant and avoiding certain foods or activities that could disrupt the healing process.

4

Abutment Placement

Once osseointegration is complete, you’ll return to your dentist or oral surgeon for the placement of the abutment. This is a small connector that’s attached to the top of the implant and serves as the anchor for the replacement tooth or teeth. The abutment placement is usually a quick and simple procedure that’s done under local anesthesia.

5

Restoration

The last stage of dental implant process involves placing a custom-made replacement tooth, such as a dental crown, bridge or denture, onto the abutment using dental cement or a screw. This completes the process, resulting in a natural-looking and functional replacement tooth.
