What is a Fixed Bridge?

This comprehensive article will guide you through the world of fixed bridges, exploring their types, benefits, placement process, and maintenance requirements.
Types of Fixed Bridges
- Traditional Fixed Bridges: The most common type of fixed bridge, traditional bridges consist of artificial teeth (pontics) that are fused between two dental crowns. The crowns are securely placed over the adjacent healthy teeth, anchoring the bridge in place.
- Cantilever Bridges: Cantilever bridges are suitable when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the gap. The bridge is anchored to a single healthy tooth, providing stability and restoring functionality.
- Maryland Bridges: Maryland bridges use a porcelain or metal framework bonded to the back of adjacent teeth. Unlike traditional bridges, they eliminate the need for dental crowns, making them a conservative option for certain cases.

Benefits of Fixed Bridges:
- Restored Dental Function: Fixed bridges allow you to bite and chew food properly, improving digestion and overall nutrition. They also restore speech clarity, enhancing communication abilities.
- Enhanced Aesthetics: By filling in the gaps caused by missing teeth, fixed bridges create a natural-looking smile, improving facial appearance and boosting self-confidence. They also prevent adjacent teeth from shifting, preserving the alignment of your natural teeth.
- Permanent Solution: Unlike removable dentures, fixed bridges are a permanent dental restoration. They are securely anchored to adjacent teeth or dental implants, providing long-term stability and reliability.
The Fixed Bridge Placement Process
Fixed bridges provide a permanent and aesthetically pleasing solution for replacing missing teeth, restoring both the functionality and beauty of your smile.
Consultation and Examination
During your initial consultation, your dentist will evaluate your oral health, take X-rays, and discuss the available options. They will assess the suitability of fixed bridges for your specific needs and explain the treatment process.
Tooth Preparation
For traditional fixed bridges, the adjacent teeth are prepared by removing a small amount of enamel to create space for the dental crowns. Impressions of your teeth are then taken to create an accurate mold for the dental laboratory.
Temporary Bridge Placement
While your custom bridge is being fabricated, a temporary bridge will be placed to protect the prepared teeth and maintain their alignment. This temporary restoration ensures that you can still chew and speak comfortably.
Final Bridge Placement
Once your custom bridge is ready, your dentist will remove the temporary bridge and replace it with the permanent one. They will ensure a precise fit, make any necessary adjustments, and securely bond the bridge in place.
