Recommended on a case-by-case basis to enhance the outcomes of non-surgical treatment.
Periodontal treatment guidelines emphasize the importance of achieving periodontal health through minimally invasive and cost-effective methods. Non-surgical periodontal treatments play a crucial role in this endeavor, primarily through scaling and root planing. This procedure involves meticulous cleaning of the root surfaces to eliminate plaque, calculus (tartar), and bacterial toxins from deep periodontal pockets, while also smoothing the tooth root. In some cases, additional therapies like local delivery antimicrobials and host modulation may be recommended based on individual needs.
Following scaling and root planing, many patients may not require further active treatment, including surgical intervention. However, it is important to note that the majority of patients will benefit from ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain periodontal health. Although non-surgical therapy has its limitations, it remains an essential component of periodontal care. In cases where non-surgical treatments fall short of achieving optimal periodontal health, surgical procedures may be necessary to restore periodontal anatomy and support effective oral hygiene practices.
